Personally I think hes takeing his opinions where they shouldnt be.
<i><b>Personally,</i></b> I think you're taking your opinion from where the sun don't shine.
The fact that Valve actually build a code path around what Nvidia needs is a sign there is internal dispute over a few things.
Doesn't show me any dispute at all. Valve built the code-path not for nV but for nV's unfortunate customers. I think this recent 'expose' simply shows that Valve doesn't Give a Faq about what nV thinks. This helps Valve (they try to help nV owners) while seriously hurting nV's credibility/reputation. The fact that DX9 is a standard, and one of the purposes of universal standards is to reduce the work for coders, and yet only the FXs need a special code path (requiring alot of extra work), simply shows that the 'Way it's meant to be played' may not always be the best way for consumers. Like [H] says, all this extra coding has to increase the development cost/time (was this the cause of the delay in release?), which of course is passsed along to us the consumer, and me (as an ATI owner) I don't benifit AT ALL from all this extra time/cost!
And no it's not all good, it's in fact very bad. Yipee you will get knocked-up performance. Yet it will still suck when compared to the ATIs, and at what cost?
One can only hope nV learns from this and makes sure that their future products are more 'universal'. The only bright spot may be that we will see the NV40 (and thus likely the R420) arrive to market way ahead of initially scheduled (and hopefully THAT doesn't hurt it).
Only time will tell, but it doesn't look good coming around the first turn.
