nVidia upgrade w/SP2?

After I installed WinXP SP2 to my Gateway 700XL (about two years old? I
forget, but I think it was purchased about, or maybe a little more than two
years ago) there was another upgrade listed for the nVidia Ge Force video
card that came in the computer (Ti 4600?).

Question for you all is, should I use that upgrade or should I check the
nVidia website for any upgrades? Being as how this is a "Gateway" nVidia
card, I'm not sure how compatible the true nVidia drivers are or would be
for this card. I guess I'm unsure how much Gateway gets various
manufacturers like nVidia, Creative Labs, etc. to "bastardize" their cards
to save money for Gateway. I suppose, if any nVidia upgrade would give
problems, the Microsoft upgrade would probably be worse?

Maybe I should just yank the nVidia card out and buy an off-the-shelf nVidia
or ATI latest and hottest card to replace it? Same with the sound card.
Gateway sold it in the 700XL as a Creative Labs Soundblaster Audigy. How
close is it to an Audigy?

Anyway, any advice would be appreciated.

By the way, the SP2 install has gone so smoothly on two of my XP machines so
far, it's spooky. It's almost as if Microsoft knew what they were doing!

Regards,

Turner

Personally I just do upgrades from the nvidia website for my Gateways with
nvidia cards. As far as I know the video cards and not really
"persoanlized" for Gateways, and if they are, the two I have take nvidia.com
drivers with no trouble anyway.

Despite attempts to brand commodity cards like nVidia graphics cards, modems,
sound cards, motherboards, etc, the reality for the last 5 five years or so has
been that the brand name companies use nearly 100% off-the-shelf commodity
products in their computers. So the hardware manufacturer's device drivers are
nearly a lead-pipe cinch to work, and they are usually more up-to-date with bug
fixes and improvements than what is most often found on brand-name (like
Gateway) web sites.

The economies in design, manufacturing, and support are just to great to ignore.
There are very few exceptions, mostly Dell nowadays, because Dell is the only
company that can strong-arm manufacturers into building proprietary motherboard
designs perfectly suited for a Dell chassis... Ben Myers

Thanks, folks

I think I'll ignore the Microsoft upgrade and head on over to nVidia to see
what is available for the latest drivers.
