NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver has stopped working, and has recovered.

Hey, all. Before you go on and give me the normal solutions to this issue, such as hardware monitoring software, overclocking and setting the NVIDIA Driver to High-Performance, I wish to explain my scenario, and that a lot of these solutions did not work out yet. I think this is more of a dying GPU problem.

About a few months ago, I updated the drivers for my NVIDIA 555m following a few low-FPS issues ( About 30 - 20 FPS in recent games ), thinking that a new driver would help fix the hiccups in gameplay ( I have 6 GBs of RAM, an Intel i5 quad-core processor, and a 64-bit Windows 7 ). Needless to say, this fixed the FPS on my games, at least to a manageable speed, so I was happy with the move.

However, after a few days with this update, I started to notice problems. On occasion, the NVIDIA kernel mode driver would stop working, and cause Windows 7 to reset the graphics card driver. At first, I didn't pay attention to it, since it only happened once or twice per day, and nothing else occurred afterwards. However, that was my mistake - By not investigating the issue further, the problem only grew. Soon, the issues started happening frequently, and led to BSODs where Nvlddmkm.sys was the fault, with the computer saying the attempt to restart the service ultimately failed.

I have since been using the internal Intel HD Graphics, which works well on most of my games with max settings, except for games like Saints Row The Third. However, all other games, including Crysis 2 works well with the HD Graphics, only having minor FPS issues on the highest settings.

Today, I have attempted a reinstall of the NVIDIA 265 graphics driver from the CD provided with my Dell XPS 17, thinking it was time to see if these issues would go away with older drivers ( Performed a clean install, with only the Graphics driver, no 3D vision or HD Audio ). As soon as I installed the driver, reset the computer, and started a game, the computer almost instantly BSOD'd again, with Nvlddmkm.sys once more being the fault.

Judging by what has been occurring with the NVIDIA hardware, I feel as if, after 2-3 years of use, the GPU is finally giving out, supported by the fact that these problems came slowly. I have restored my computer to the factory state, reinstalled many different NVIDIA drivers that were compatible with the 555m, but none have fixed the issues.

EDIT: I apologize - I haven't put in system specs in my desperation to find a end-all solution to this maddening issue. Note that my NVIDIA Geforce 555m will not show, because I had recently uninstalled the driver.

I know this forum may frown upon bumping, but I gotta do it to get a bit more attention and help, because I've wanted to try and fix this issue for a long time, and my computer tech expert friend doesn't seem to know what the problem is, so I'm completely turning this over to any technical support forums I can for a better fix.

Besides, it's been two days, and I haven't gotten a single answer. Please, if there's anyone out there who knows a fix to this situation, I'd love to hear it.

If the updated driver doesn't work for you and you are still getting the BSOD then there are a few other options you can try. Another rather easy fix is to copy a good updated nvlddmkm.sys over to the computer with the problems. For this to work though you have to have a second computer with Windows 7 with a NVIDIA video card. If you do have an extra PC with a good working NVIDIA video card then do the following.

1. Click Start
2. Click Run (or in the white box that says Start Search)
3. Type C:\windows\system32\drivers and hit enter
4. Find the file nvlddmkm.sys
5. Right click on the file and choose properties
6. Go to the details tab check the version
7. If the version is 8.11.17.xxxx or anything newer than 7.15.11.5669 it might work
8. Close the properties page
9. Right click on the file and choose Copy
10. Find a location either network storage or thumb drive and save the file
11. Now go to your computer with the BSOD issue and navigate to the C:\windows\system32\drivers folder
12. Right click on the nvlddmkm.sys and choose rename
13. Type .old on the end (file should look like this nvlddmkm.sys.old)
14. Now copy and paste the nvlddmkm.sys off the thumb drive\CD\DVD into this folder
15. Reboot and test

I never said I was overclocking the machine, and if I was, it was all an automatic process by the Intel i5 processor. I feel as if the problem was started by a BETA driver I had installed. It may have done something with the .sys file that my computer doesn't seem to like too much.

As for your solution, papablista, the .sys file is removed from my computer when the NVIDIA driver is uninstalled. I have already tried the newer driver version, and the driver version that came packaged with the system, but both of those bluescreened. My PC expert said that this could be a virus-like behavior, but I haven't found any indication that it is a virus.

A little extra detail I had forgotten: Whenever I install a new driver, sometimes, it works for a few hours, and then the problem comes back. This little inconsistancy in my system is random, and it has led me countless times to believe that the driver works, only to have it come back after an hour, or even the next day, when I reboot the computer again.
