Nvidia Windows kernel mode driver, version 314.07 stopped responding....

So I have a workstation (HP Z600) with an Nvidia Quadro FX1800 graphics card. Now I know this isn't exactly for gaming, but I recently bought Skyrim and installed it on this machine. Everything runs great except for a random hard crash resulting in both screens going black, and a message popping up at the bottom of the screen with the following message:

"Nvidia Windows kernel mode driver, version 314.07 stopped responding and recovered successfully"

Before the driver updated to 314.07 it displayed the old drivers (311.35) in the message.

If I do not restart the computer afterwards it will crash immediately upon loading Skyrim. Or if I decide to browser the web it will crash at random. Only after I've restarted the computer will it work correctly again and it will continue to work just fine until I play Skyrim where it will eventually crash.

Sometimes I can go for 40 minuets before this happens, sometimes not even 5 minuets. There isn't really a common point in the game where it crashes, perhaps a little more frequently when I talk to a character.

What I've tried:

1. Re-installing the drivers using and not using the clean install option on the driver setup wizard.

2. Using an EVGA Geforce GT 430 card. Problem is my Quadro FX1800 also doubles as my audio device. It appears that there is no audio chipset on the motherboard because when I remove the Fx1800 and replace it with the GT 430 It shows that there is no audio device installed. Unfortunately I don't have a sound card laying around and Skyrim will not load unless you have an audio device. This is one I still need to explore if you guys think it could make a difference.

3. Using Beta 310.34 drivers. (only Beta drivers I could find for this card)

4. Increasing the fan speed. Was running near 70c playing the game until I installed EVGA precision and set the fan speeds. Now runs mid 40s idle and mid to upper 50s playing the game (which does consume 90%+ of my GPU)

I might try installing another game and seeing if it crashes there too.

Windows event log shows the error as follows:

If you need anymore details just let me know. I'd really like to get this figured out. It's very frustrating.

Specs:
Intel Xeon E5520 @ 2.27GHz,
6gb of ram
Windows 7 pro 64bit
Nvidia Quadro FX1800

Try setting all clock speeds to normal. Frame rate may go down, but the crashes should stop. I've found that this happens a lot when the GPU is under-volted for an overclock. Rule of thumb: lower the overclock first, don't increase the voltage.

To my knowledge everything is stock. I don't even know how to overclock. What is a normal clock speed?

Edit: Never mind just looked it up. It's already normal. Core clock 550 (Shader clock 1375)

Sadly, the simple solution isn't the correct solution 🙁

Normally, what fixes this for me (and a few others) is bumping up the GPU voltage a tad, but if you are running at stock, there shouldn't be a need to do that. I've also noticed that this crash was not nearly as common before the 31X.XX series drivers.

What I suggest is a clean removal of ALL graphics drivers (you'll find that Windows keeps the old ones, and this leads to errors quite often). There are many Google results that will help with this process. Once you clear all of the video drivers (you'll know you did it right when you can't run at the correct resolution), download the most recent WHQL stable drivers (At the time of writing, 314.07), and install them.

It's a shame that GeForce drivers don't do a proper uninstall within the launcher, as this is the source of many mystery crashes. Hopefully this solves your problems! 😛

I've just had this problem, and it drove me crazy! Tried all kinds of "fixes" but what ended up working was formatting the PC and starting totally fresh, and before i connected to the internet, i chose to only let windows update search for updates, but let me decide whether to install them. After that i connected, and installed the nvidia driver myself. I noticed when the windows update had searched for update that there was one post, that said something with windows kernel drivers. I chose NOT to install this, as i suspect it might be whats causing the problem.
Anyways, hope this might help out some people. It worked for me at least.

I have the same problem with a gigabyte 670 and I have a i3770k and running at stock but it doesnt happen when I play a game it happens in windows so I removed it and checked for dust and any other issues and I have reinstalled windows and it was still happening until 15 mins ago I think it may be heat related but board and card are cool to touch too so I am completely stumped it just started last night .....

I am ready to return it as I cant be doing with this help anyone.

plus when i try to install a driver the machine crashes its killing me

I am currently using the nVidia 306.97 drivers which I installed manually after I removed old drivers. I also had only the driver checked in the install box so as not to get everything else that usually is bundled with drivers. That drives me nuts... I cannot understand why software companies have to include so much junk with drivers if all you need are the drivers.

Any way, I was told I needed to update my drivers recently but am holding off to see what I find out. I wonder if moving up to a newer driver but just not the 314.07 ones.

Anyone have any comment on that?

Hello guys this solution seems to work in almost every case...(kernel problem)

I belive I have found the reason why it happens and how you can fix it.

The PhysX software tries to use your cpu and this is causing the error. This can happen not only for your game but also with java/flash related software like your web browser displaying content.

The fix is to ensure your graphics card is set to be used by PhysX.

Nvidia Control Panel -> 3D Settings -Y Set PhysX Configuration -> Select a PhysX processor -> choose your graphics card instead of leaving it on auto select.

Not sure what it is for Ati but I know this should also fix that chipset related issues also for this.

***Please leave a comment to say if this has helped you or not.***

I am trying this at the moment, will update later if this has worked or not (using dual sli - gtx 580 3gb & gtx 660)

UPDATE: I chose the gtx 660 to be dedicated to PhysX and within 5 seconds crashed, usually get at least a couple of minutes

UPDATE: Trying out my main gpu (gtx 580) as the PhysX processor.. so far no crash

YOU THE MAN. FINALLY FIXED MY ISSUE. I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH MY NVIDIA GEFORCE 210 AND SO I GOT THE GT 430 AND STILL HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. NOW I MADE THE CHANGE YOU SUGGESTED AND FINALLY NO MORE CRASHES

which one did you do to fixed your problem?

Thank you! Helped me a lot. After hours of reading, formating, unistalling, reinstalling I think this was the simple solution. :)

probably you scale wrong

rendering requests is outside the scope of this specification.

go to display size and position set resolution to 1024p to 768p(or lower) and scale to full screen using display(default is gpu)
note that the resolution appears to have not changed(after hitting aplly)
you can also use gpu but that will keep your gpu clusters busy with scaling instead of other operations like rendering your game`s special settings like ambient ocllusion, softshadows, geometry instancing

if you scale with display you need to adjust your display to the page-size 16:9/auto-zoom/widescreen

btw tell me the performance you gained this way

if you do the above you scaled up about 2 or 3 times your fps in games

also you lower the bandwich for the gpu to handle on the fly
and let the gpu do what it does best (manipulating displays)

also latest displays(2005 and above) scale very well

take note refresh rate is depending on fps so you need 60 fps (60 hz)

I have a similar problem. I used to have an AMD HD 7850 and I had the driver patched to be able to overclock my Korean made 1440p monitor. I bought a GTX 780 and while I was waiting for the delivery tried un patching the driver and removing them all. After this I couldn't play a game for more than 5 mins with "your graphic driver stopped working" messages. Since then I have installed the GTX 780 uninstalled, downgraded, upgraded and hunted down every AMD, ATI, or Nvidia driver on the system to delete and do the whole thing again. I still can't fix it. The new error is something about Nvidia windows kernel 332.22 has stopped working.

I'm starting to think the only way out of this is a clean OS install on a clean drive and start fresh.

Worked for me, too! Many thanks!
