I'm looking for an external SSD for backup on my system: mobo is Asus X79 Deluxe.
I would like NVMe. Are all such SSD drives internal cards or do some of them connect by USB?

There are external enclosures that will accept an NVMe drive.

But...for backups? WHY would you do that?
The speed of the NVMe is cut down by the USB interface.

And an X79 based system predates M.2 and NVMe by several years. You're spending money on new tech that is pretty much useless on that old system.


For a backup drive, there is ZERO benefit for a NVMe drive. Especially in an old system.

Quite possibly, not even an SSD.
An 8TB Seagate external HDD can be had for $130.

Over a gigabit LAN, there is zero difference between a spinning HDD and an SSD of any type.

My NAS has a 480GB Seagate Ironwolf SSD, and several HDDs.

From my main PC, the time to transfer data to either is exactly the same, no matter which it is talking to. The LAN is the limiting factor, not the drives.
Even an HDD is faster than the LAN.

If you wnat a 2TB USB SSD to do this, anything Samsung/Crucial/SanDisk would work.
