Hello,

i’m thinking of upgrading the hdd on my dell optiplex 3040 and i’m considering two options: sata iii ssd 2.5” and an nvme in a pcie 3.0 m.2 adapter. However, i’m not quite sure whether the latter option would be bootable or not. Anyone have any experience of doing this in a 3040 or similar age optiplex machine? If it’s a no to ne booting then it’ll be sata iii but want to explore the nvme idea as it’s faster and newer tech.
Two threads I came across which don’t quite fully answer my questions:

What do you use this system for?

If you have to jump through hoops to make an older system boot from an NVMe drive vs a SATA III drive, don't.

If you can eventually force the system to do it, you benefit by a few seconds in boot time.
That's about it.

"faster and newer tech " is not always applicable to all systems or use cases.

A SATA III SSD would be a drop in replacement for an HDD.
In most uses, an NVMe drive in a PCIe adapter will be no different than a SATA III SSD.

Keep it simple.
Fit in a quality 2.5 and it's done.
The only place most users will see a diff is in benchmarks.

thanks. Good advice. Only used for day to day simple things like youtube, excel, netflix. Nothing fancy.

Sounds like the more sensible option. Thanks. Got hung up on “using the latest tech” when it’s clearly not necessary and probably not worth the aggro.
