NWN always crashes very early?

I am trying to run NWN on a PC running Windows XP Home Edition on a P4
w/ 2GB RAM, and having no luck.

I go through the tutorial fine. I then go to the shop and stock up on
armor, sword, small shield. OK so far.

I then try to walk through the door to enter the world beyond. System
just crashes and reboots. Every time. Repeatable. I've done it 4 times,
trying to save just before walking out, or going from the beginning
again.

So far I have only tried it with the pre-built characters. I don't want
to bother to learn the character generation stuff if I can't play it...
:-(

Have you updated to the latest version of the game?
Have you updated to the latest version of graphic and sound drivers for your
system?

Downloading, as the previous poster replied, the latest drivers for video
and sound is a good first step. You should also download latest patches
from Microsoft Updates including DirectX.

What kind of video card are you running?

I don't remember the card exactly. I was a high end card capable of
running both a digital LCD and RGB monitor (I have an Apple Cinima HD
plus generic 20" CRT attached to the system -- gives me 1920 X 1600 for
primary and 1600 X 1024 for second monitor).

At any rate, I went to the home site and downloaded the latest version
of the game. That fixed my crashes.

However, the site shows a screen image of the main menu page with an
"update" button. I have an "option" button there?? Even after
upgrading to the latest patch, I still have "option" but no "update"
button. How come?
