nzxt grid v2 can't remove fans

I'm trying to remove my fans from the grid v2 but I'm finding them quite difficult to actually pull out and I fear that if I pull to hard that I'll break the fan controller and the pins will get stuck in the fan connectors
also it seems pretty hard to get a grip of the fan connectors so any help or ideas would be great

It might be possible to take the top off the grid box, so you see the connections directly, and can grab the fan connector more firmly near the point that's plugged in, so you don't rip out the wires.
