Question NZXT H1 suddenly overheating

My son has been using with no issues a PC I built for him 18 months ago. Yesterday while using Zwift (in 4K) on one screen and watching YouTube on another (also in 4K) it suffered a BSOD because it overheated. I turned it back on and it shut down a couple of minutes later (with no apps running) due to overheating. I left it a day, opened up the case, replaced the thermal paste on the CPU thinking that might be the culprit, got rid of all the dust in the system (there was not much) and turned it back on again while the box was totally open. The CPU cooler fan turned on and immediately the CPU started getting hot and another BSOD within 2 minutes - all while ambient temp was about 25Celsuis. This happened a couple more times before I managed to capture some data from HWMonitor about the system.

Unfortunately I am totally stuck as I have no clue how to identify a fix for the overheating problem. Is it the CPU malfunctioning and needs replacing, something to do with the motherboard, the NZXT integrated CPU cooler or what??? Please help.

PC info is as follows:
Case: NZXT H1 case (w/ integrated power supply and 140mm AIO liquid cooler

not all sensors in Asus boards are accurate. On my last PC I had temps that were always about 125c or some that were negative scores.

The CPU sensor should be but the other ones may not be. I can find other people with high scores for tmpin7 for instance.

78c is warm for a 3600 at idle. If its under load its not so bad as anything below 90 considered fine by AMD.

what is aio doing? its meant to cool cpu, check it out before looking at the CPU.

Whatever the sensors say the thing gets hot enough to crash the whole system. That's the problem I would like t fix. Even without cooling I would think that the PC would not overhead from a cold start in 2 minutes.

I am now experiencing the same thing. Just turned on my PC today and all the sudden previous idle temp around 50-60 now to 80+, it shuts off my pc couple times...

Same issue here with pretty much the same setup. It was idling at 85 for a while out of nowhere. Just changed the thermal paste today twice and it made it worse somehow, rocketing over 110 on startup before shutting down. Haven't had an issue with this until this past week.

The NZXT case has been recalled because of a fire hazard.
It was fixed, but not completely.
Google "nzxt h1 fire" for more info.
The cause was supposedly in the riser cable.

That may not be the proximate cause of your thermal issues, but check into it.

The usual cause of overheating in a pc using a aio cooler is either a pump failure or clog, or air has intruded into the system. AIO coolers do not last forever. perhaps 5 years; 18 months seems a bit quick.

I think I would return the case for cash if I could.
Rebuild using a conventional case and a good air cooler.

This doesn't have anything to do with the riser cable fire hazard, but is anybody experiencing similar behavior? I have the H1 and 3600 for a year now with a near silent fan curve. Temps tended to be around 50-60 idle and 75 max under load. Last week I had a random crash (power loss) and since then my fan curves were changed back to normal and I got crazy high temperatures even in bios. After updating that and resetting everything multiple times I started reseating everything and changing paste. After a whole weekend of debugging my assumption is the seating of the Aio. I screwed the nuts till the end and this was probably too much and made the problem worse (100°). I loosened them now, screwed them by hand (evenly) and temps are back to normal. Still this is very puzzling to me, as the problems started out of nowhere. Didn't know neither that aios are so sensible to seating, though the more pressure the better. Is that a thing? Does anyone has similar experiences? Board is a MSI MPG B550i wifi. Fan is now 30% idle, 75% at 70°. Pump is 50% and 100% at 70°

Same problem here, same mobo also. Mine has been doing this for months. It seems to be orientation dependant on my end. If I slightly move the aio there can be a 30 to 40 c difference. I also noticed some chipping on the aio plate when i removed it earlier. I think I screwed to hard and made theses, maybe you should take a look at yours. Pump and fan seems to be working fine on my end . The only clue i have for you is again orientation or the fact that screwing it to tight might have damaged it

I've been having this same problem on and off for months now. My motherboard is an asus rog strix as well, but its a z390-i.

So nice to see people having the same problem! I was questioning my sanity but this is EXACTLY what happens with my unit. If I tilt it over (and I normally do so when maintaining it) I get these crazy high tempuratures. If I shake it around, tilt it to the other side and disconnect the AIO once it goes back to normal if I am lucky.
I can only imagine that it has something to do with the water flow that is somehow distracted - influenced by the tilt. Did you find a fix for it?
 
There is air in the aio system.
All aio coolers will eventually ingest air through porosity in the cooling tubes.
They last perhaps 5 years.
The air bubbles will rise to the top, however the case is oriented.
If the pump is at the highest point, it will have air inside, making it ineffective.
Or, sometimes if the radiator intake is at the top, it can only suck in air.

It is time to replace the cooler.
