I recently upgraded CPU, mobo, and RAM from an i7 4770k (MSI Z87 MPower Max) to an i7 10700k (Gigabyte Z490 Aorus Elite AC). Both in the same case, had no problems using the front panel audio connection (3.5mm) for mic, and sound with the old MSI board.

After upgrading and installing the new CPU, mobo, and RAM I installed all the necessary drivers directly from the provided disk, updating to the latest Realtek drivers direct from Gigabyte's website. Whenever I try plugging into the front panel 3.5mm jack I can hear all the in-game sounds but the mic doesn't pick up my voice. I've triple checked the front panel audio connection and it is plugged in as it should be, I've tried the mobo audio jacks as well to no avail (only sound in, nothing on the mic). At this point I've tried reinstalling drivers, checking the front panel audio connection, and playing around with Windows settings to rule out a software issue. Also same case, same headphones worked with no problems in the front panel audio jack on the old mobo. Feel free to drop any suggestions.

Solution
If neither motherboard nor front panel mic inputs are working I would say the audio options are not set for the jacks as a mic input. Same case working on the old motherboard means the jack should not be an issue.
