Got an old HD 6950 that I want to water cool using a Corsair H50 AIO,bought a NZXT Kraken G10 because the 6950 is on the compatibility list and installed no problem following the manual and watching videos on youtube, but when I try to play a game (Killing Floor 2,CS:GO,Sniper Elite 3) I get as far as the menu and then my screen goes black, there is still sound just no display. I want to know if I need a shim (manual mentioned something about some card models needing one) or is something else causing the problem?

System Specs:
AMD FX 4100
Sandisk 240GB SSD
HD 6950
Gigabyte 970 DS3P
Crucial Ballistix DDR3 8GB Dual channel kit
Corsair 650TX Power supply
Corsair 400R case

Solution
Check your temps.

The point of the shim is to allow the heat from the GPU chip to transfer to the waterblock because sometimes the mounting hardware doesn't allow the waterblock to contact the surface of the GPU chip properly.

If you're overheating then you'll most likely need the shim.

Solution
Your problem were mostly cause by ineffective transfer of heat from gpu into your water cooling system. Rather than using shim, using thermal paste would be more economical and efficient. Make sure your thermal paste were applied evenly.

I applied thermal paste to the GPU when i installed the Kraken,I just have no idea why i am getting black screens.

I got a chance to check my temps before the screen went black,it was about 38-40C running killing floor 2
