NZXT Phantom - only NZXT fans?

Can I use any fan of the size or do they have to be from NZXT?
I ask because someone told me that if I buy this case I'd only be able to install fans from NZXT.

you should be able to use any brand of fan you like as long as its the right size/shape to the case you have

Nope, you can use whatever fans you want as long as their a supported size.

You might want to add a front fan. Fans do make a huge difference in performance. Even with a good case you probably need to add a fan or two. But you can find great fans for $10. Fan choice, company, doesn't matter. Only size.

You are buying one of the best cases on the market. I love that case. It's performance and reviews are off the chart. Good choice.

I much prefer nzxt fans because the one I linked are so bloody loud.

Not necessarily.
Your looking for a balance between CFM (Cubic Feet of air moved Per minute) and dBA (decibels, measure of sound). Static Pressure isn't a concern since its a case fan.

This is a good fan, if expensive.

Incredible fan for performance and low dB: Cooler Master Blade Master. (120mm)

Great for performance and ball bearings (for bottom of case) : Scythe Gently Typhoon

I decided to go for this.
However, I'm not sure whether I should use it as exhaust or intake. I know that I can simply install it the other way and it changes but which should I install it as?
It will be installed in the front of the PC. I checked and there's completely nothing behind it, no HDD or SSD.

To achieve your basic front to back airflow through the case, this is how you want the fans set up.
Front, side and bottom panels are intake, rear and top are exhaust.

Put as an intake.
