Oblivion and BF2 - recommended gfx cards

Hi, I was just wondering what would be the best gfx card that I should buy with my new system (listed below) to run BF2 at 1280 and Oblivion at 1024 with max settings. Here is my future system:

AMD Athlon 64 3700+
2x1gb PC3200 RAM
300GB Maxtor HD (7200 rpm)
500 watt PS

If there are any of the above components that I really should upgrade to play these games, please mention. I am looking to spend $300-350 (I was thinking of the 7900 GT, is this a good choice?).

yes the 7900gt is a very good choice


the 7900gt will handle BF2 very good

same with oblivion

I disagree. The 7900GT is a great card for BF2 and most other games, but it is brought to it's knees in oblivion. For the same price or a little cheaper, the X1800XT outperforms it by a long shot. If he is going to put 100-300 hours into Oblivion and wants the best card for $300-350, the 7900GT is NOT the card to get. X1800XT is the way to go with only the X1900XT and XTX being better.

I"m rolling with Paul on this one, $325 gets you a 512mb X1800XT. I recently purchased the Sapphire bundle and its a great card. My overclocks (although not at max) are quite nice for the stock cooler, you just need to up the fan speed.

All things considered X1800XT>7900GT
 
Ati cards rule the Direct3D battle... so an X1800XT or better will eat its way through Oblivion and BF2 (I know since I have Oblivion with an X1900XT... and I get decent frame-rates on ultra-high settings...)

ATI despite the benchmark are POS with poor drivers. Also FPS hardly matter in Oblivion as long as you have a reasonable setup.
 
Funny, I've owned and used an 8mb rage,7000, 8500, 9000, 9600xt,(9500 for about a week) 9700pro, 9800XT, X700, x800pro, x800xt, and an X1800XT, I've had no issues with drivers.

Now games, thats a different story, sometimes I've found glithces or bugs, however most of it tends to be game side requiring a patch or update. You sir have obviously had little to no experience with their cards as anything within the catalyst series has proven to be quite stable and bug free IMHO.

My best card of the time (and probably personal favorite) was/is my 9700pro. Dominated in 2002-early 2003 and didnt give me one problem, so as for your "POS" comment, your problem must be your own error. I've sampled both sides of the fence, I like what I see, your opinion is bias and rather uneducated....kthxbye.

EDIT: What exactly do you mean, "FPS hardly matter"?
So your saying if I'm netting 10fps, it doesnt matter
that the game has turned into a slide show? --Might want to elaborate a bit please.

Where did you find your $325 X1800XT? At newegg, I found a Sapphire card for only $289, but at tigerdirect.com I found a non-Sapphire card for $500 ($450 after mail rebate). Is there that great a difference between Sapphire and not? Does it even matter? Also, I live in Canada, so newegg isn't an option.

Unfortunately I did buy it off newegg, therefore that price would be unavailable to you =(

At the time it was $339, however I had a small credit on my account due to some "shipping" issues late December, which I applied toward the GPU lowering it to $325.

Shop around (look hard) I'm sure you could find an X1800XT for that price.
 
I guess I am going to have to look hard. Both ncix and tigerdirect.ca have the card for $600-$650 CAD (!!!), while newegg is basically half that. Is there some reason for this? The nVidia cards don't have this major price hike ($390 CAD for 7900gt). If I could get the x1800xt at a decent price, I think that would be the way I'd go, from the responses here.

Any Canadian buyers who have succeeded in this x1800xt<$400 feat? Maybe I'll just order it to a friend's in the US and smuggle it back 😀 .

You sir are an Idjit, living in a past long gone. This isn't the Rage vs TNT era.

ATi's drivers are just as solid as nVidias, and without the floptimizations. Both have their stengths and weaknesses, anyone whose used both knows that.

NewEgg is only for the US, they won't even deliver to a US address with a Canadian MC/Visa, Ba$$turdz!

It is 256MB instead of 512, but damn $407s not a bad price, and it's an HIS card (my fav ATi brand).
 
I havn't actualy got my new computer yet and im wondering whether to get x1800xt or 7900gt. Im mainly buying the pc cos i can't run games fo shizzle on this pc with a 64mb gfx card and 2.0 ghz pentium 4 prossesor!

Well it depends on what you expect to be playing in the future.

My advice would be to get the X1800XT for long term hold, and the usually slightly cheaper GF7900GT for a shorter term hold (thinking about a DX10 class card for early next year?). Another consideration is the X1800GTO, but that if you're planning to upgrade before Xmas.

There is alot of back/forth in the games, try and pick which on suits you best;

Personally I'd be looking for the plain X1900 when it hits, just like the AIW X1900, it's sorta the sweet spot of nice future-looking design, and practical current use.
 
Experience with a 9200, 9600XT, X800GTO, and finally X1900XT have all shown that ATI drivers are pretty much solid, the only problems I've had with ATI cards was one faulty card, nothing to do with the drivers. So before you start saying ATI are crap and the like, please go and actually play on a pc with an ATI card for a good amount of time before spouting out BS, since its getting my shoes dirty...
 
They are going to release an X1900GTO, so it should be good for the mainstream performance market... cheapness, whilst retaining all those pixel shader processors that make X1900's chew through shader-heavy games like FEAR and Oblivion...

The X1800 is an amazing card. The 7900 GT is an awesome card too, but the X1800 takes it in image quality and certain shader heavy titles, like oblivion.
 
Well BF2 isn't very extremely graphics intensive but oblivion is and th 7900 would run both pretty well. I would recommend the x1800 or a similar ATI card because they have better performance at Oblivian.
