OBS Studio lagging horribly

I recorded 95 minutes of game footage. Checked it at the end it was all stuttering and the picture was lagging out (possibly related to why game performance nosedived at times).

Was it OBS at fault? It's set to record at 1920 x 1080 @30 fps (2 channels so I can alter the microphone audio later) to a Western Digital Green drive. I've recorded to there hundreds of times using Shadowplay and not had an issue (only the occasional issue, but the footage is pretty much always playable). OBS was behind from the beginning. I was trying to use game capture, but triggering it without starting the recording first seemed impossible. Right now, Shadowplay isn't recording microphone audio at all.

Or is it the hard drive? Is it too slow? This drive doesn't seem good for much, which makes me question why it was made.

Or maybe it's the spec of the PC? i5 4570, 16 GB RAM, GTX 780

If I record to the WD Black Drive, will that work?

Worth a shot to the faster drive. You can check disk usage % in task manager while recording to the Green and see if it's pegged/can't keep up. Certainly possible. They were meant to be more of a storage drive for stuff that isn't accessed or written to all that much (large videos, photos, music, whatever else you have).

I use mine almost exclusively for storage, except when I need to record. Shadowplay seemed happy to record to Green, but sometimes it would decide to stop recording a few seconds in, don't know why

EDIT: Tried again, and forgot to press F10 so it recorded the audio, but not what the game was showing (so just got a Steam window playing F1 2016 sounds). Is there a simpler program? Consoles have this sorted, one button and it's recording mic, game audio and picture. Don't want mic? Un-tick it. Done

Still lagged IIRC (been a few days since I retried). I went back to using Shadowplay (which as I found out was set to game audio only). I'll use Audacity if I need a separate audio track
