"Obtain an IP address automatically", wrong subnet

I have a new computer using a Wireless Network Adapter. When I configure the adapter to "Obtain an IP address automatically", the computer ends up with an IP address of 169.254.x.x.

Everything works fine if I give it a static IP and use 8.8.8.8 for the DNS, but would rather my router track/deconflict the IP addresses.

Other computers using the wireless connection get assigned IP addresses in the correct subnet (192.168.0.x).

Any idea why this is happening and how to fix it?

Why do you not use the Default Gateway address in the DNS box?

set your router to look for dns as 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and set your pc to get ip/subnet from gateway IP
don't for get to set the proper subnet on your router for your lan. not your wan

If this is windows 10 search for the fix, it's becoming more and more common. The host is self assigning an iP address as it's not getting one from dhcp. (169.254.x.x)

Found the problem...

The router had a setting called "DNS Relay".

It was off.

After turning it on, the computer received a proper IP address (in the proper subnet).

Except that shouldnt fix it dns relay has nothing to do with dhcp or dhcp helper.
