So, I am new to overclocking, well cpus at least. I OC my gpu to 900 mhz but Im assuming cpus arent that easy. I was wondering how I should approach this with the asus M5A97 mobo. I am looking to OC to 4 GHz hopefully because of my cpu bottlenecking future gpu upgrades. Im going to be getting a Hyper 212 evo cooler. I am looking for any help/tips/opinion of that happening.
Its quite simple to overclock it. But making sure its stable might take some time.Since your CPU is unlocked, you will just have to increase the multiplier in the BIOS.
Increase the speed step by step until your system doesn't POST (reset your BIOS to continue by removing the battery for 10 seconds). You've then reached the limit of what you can do without increasing the voltage. Once you've increased the voltage, the heat output will get serious, but you will easily be able to go over 4 GHz.
You will also need to test if the system is stable when you increase the speed. Use Prime95 Blend test and RealTemp or HWMonitor to watch the temperatures. If the Prime95 test stops, then its unstable. If it gets too hot, the CPU will throttle.
