OC E6400 to 2.8Ghz Stable with core voltage @ 1.2625V

This seems to be working for me so if I'm missing something please let me know.

GA-965P-S3(BIOS ver 8.0)
E6400
GSKill PC6400(800) RAM
Stock cooling on Cooler Master Centurion Case
(Added 1 80mm to side of case blowing into case)
Disabled all recommended items in C2D OC ver 1.1 sticky
CPU ratio = 7X
CPU host Freq = 400
System mem multiplier = 2.0
Memory settings left at default 5-5-5-15
All system voltages left at normal except CPU core
which was lowered from normal of 1.325 to 1.2625

Using INTEL TAT, cpu-z and Orthos to measure & test.
RAN ORTHOS 12 hrs with no errors
CPU idle temp 32 to 34
Load temps with ORTHOS blend 50 - 52
Load temps with TAT full load 58- 59

All stable no errors

Does this seem right or am I missing something. I lowered the core CPU voltage to keep the temps down but didn't expect to get it that low. Temps seem acceptable to me.

I did the exact same setup for my brother's computer, but didnt lower the Vcore, i get similar temps. TAT loads the cpu much more than any real program will, orthos is a more realistic representation of what your max temps will be.

Run memtest off a bootable cd or floppy to see if your memory is completely stable.

Congrats on your good OC, and reducing the Vcore to save on temps.

Get some nice air cooling and reach 3.25 GHZ or more for 40$ with 1.28V.

If youre gonna try to push the speed any higher, youll need to get an aftermarket heatsink. I've got my E6400@3.2GHZ on a DS3 with all voltages @ stock, except for memory, which needs to be raised no matter what.

Hey thanks for reply, I ran memtest b4 the OC but not after. I'll try that tonight.

Also does anyone know the preferred method to OC if the result would be the same. Let's say wanted 2.4 Ghz. Could go with 6X Ratio and 400 freq. or 8X ratio and 300 frequency. That is if the mem multiplier was left at 2.0.

The other thing I noticed was that at some settings, if the mem multiplier was kept @ 2.0, adjusting the ratio and freq would lower the memory speed to some value below 800. I understand mathematically why this happens and is a function of ratio, frequency and multiplier. I am wondering if OC settings that result in system mem speed that is below the rated speed (i.e 533 or 677 on 800 rated memory) is not preferred because it doesn't make full use to the memory's capability.

its not possible to make an 8x ratio... only 7x and lower. And leave the mem multiplier @2 (1:1) in order no to create bottlenecks.
One thing you could do is lower the mem timings (its supoused to be good but I'm not sure why)

what temps have have on idle and stressed?

I run 34-37 Idle (depending on room temp, my dorms have really unstable heat) and 45-48 dual prime95 load measured with coretemp

You have enough headroom for at least 3.0 Ghz and still remain within safe temps.

Does anyone know the answer to which is the preferred OC method if have 2 ways to get to same OC.

Example: Want to overclock a 2.16 Ghz C2D to 2.4 Ghz can do this either by:

1 - 8x CPU ratio and 300 Freq or
2- 6X CPU ratio and 400 Freq

Or does it not matter which way as long as its stable.

What mobo do you have?

As far as I know its not possible to use an 8x mult. in fact the only options are 6x and 7x (thats on e6300 (7X native)).

On the other hand, if you are considering 6x or 7x, all I can tell you is that most oc i've seen are using 7x mult.

I'm very sorry... this post is about E6400 and I'm talking about E6300.

In this case take my last answer and replace 6x and 7x with 7x and 8x. That means Most oc's I've seen are using 8x. It may be for the rams sake... (supposing you don't have pc800 or better)
