Solution
This should be your first stop.
HOWTO: Overclock C2Q (Quads) and C2D (Duals) - Guide v1.6.1
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/240001-29-howto-overclock-quads-duals-guide

Next stop should be a guide for your particular motherboard. Google is your friend.

For anything higher than about 3.2 GHz, you will need better cooling. Here are two under $50 heatsinks that are pretty popular:
Sunbeam

Xigmatec Dark Knight
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233029

They both require a somewhat different approach to applying thermal compound.
Suggestions for applying thermal compound...
Take a look at the FSB timing, if it' set at 333mHz try setting it at 366, and then maybe 400 mHz. If it'll go to 400, make sure you have the memory set for 1:1. A pair or a quad set of the same memory may make you're attempts at OCing easier to control...

jsc's Google suggestion will get you pointed to the info for your hardware...Keep reading!

And they are pretty large, so they might not fit inside your case.

And here's a good budget cooler:

Keep your FSB:memclock ratio to 1:1. You want to adjust the mem clock ratio so it stays at twice the FSB frequency as you increase the FSB freq. (Not quite sure how Asus does it.) We discuss that here:
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/251715-29-ratio-myth

Keep in mind that these are guides, not cookbooks. YMMV. Your Mileage May Vary. Because of all the variables, you may not do as well as someone else with a similar system. Or you might do better.

Solution
I just replaced my E6850 with a Q9550. It was my first OC and the community held my hand through it. 3.6 is possible.
