OC w/ stock

i got my 1.2 atholon up to 1.47 at 50 c under full load with a retial heatsink

Fvck!! The CPU was DOA!!!NOOO! What happens is that when I turn on comp, it powers on (nothing is OC yet) no signal is sent through vid card, so screen is blank, and when I try to turn off using power button, ie right after I turned it on and there was no signal to monitor, I pressed power button, and no response- kept on working! This seems like a dead CPU to me- what do u guys think?

If CPUs could talk...

"Hi flamethrower205, i'm feeling good today. Wait a sec...what are you doing with the heatsink? WHAT? NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ARGH!!!"

I would have to agree with everyone, you killed the Athlon...not on purpose mind you :)

How are your temps so low?? My current non OC 1.2Ghz (AVHA batch code) runs at 55-60º C! I just lowered to temp to 52º C max by using some antec silver paste and modifying the hsf so there's 3x teh fans on it.

I don't know...just put the thermal paste on the die and plopped the HS on top. 46 degrees celsius isn't really that special. I usually have 42 degrees under no load or little work (MS Word, Notepad, Winamp, Internet Explorer)

I have never had very good experience with mobo monitors. I got a laser-based thermal monitor a while back. I think there is about a 5-10 degree margin of error in the mobo monitors (since it is based on voltage/amps/watts) connected to the fan headers or power supply. I'd be willing to bet you have anywhere from 45 to 50 celsius, which is probably a lot healthier for the processor too :)

I helped flamethrower put on the antec silver thermal paste and i don't think his thermometer is that far off. When you feel that chip you better believe its running at 50+ degrees. The extra fan we added definitely reduced the temp by at least 2-3 degrees. Its not much but it helps when it comes to overclocking.

Well, I never actually touched a chip that could possibly be over 110 degrees farenheit. Are you saying you can hold your finger on a 50 degree celsius surface for more than a second? Hehe, I could be wrong ya know. Btw, try thermal paste, namely Artic Silver, good stuff.

...yeah it was pretty damn hot...and i know about artic silver, unfortuanately i could not find it in any of my local stores we called and went to 3 or 4.

I think thermal paste is supposed to be thermally conductive, which is why it uses silver.....weeee! Temps are at 60ºC now under constant full load, even w/ my funky modified stock cooled that has 3 fans!
