i want to buy a SSD to put my windows 7 on and a few games such as Crysis etc
is there much difference between these 2?
OCZ Vertex 3 MAX IOPS
Samsung 840 Pro
the samsung is about £40 more, is it really worth the extra £40?

i heard the samsung 830 is just as good as the 840, if not slightly better, but 840 pro is better than both, not sure what to do 🙁 i have read that OCZ have had quite a lot of problems though

I normally recommend Samsung. The older 470 nd 830 models have stellar track records. The 840 Pro and 840 are newer models. Currently the 840 Pro is Samsung's flagship model while the 840 is a mainstream or entry level model that costs less than the 840 Pro. This is the first time Samsung has released two models aimed at two different segments of the consumer market.

I maintain the ssd database listed in the sticky at the very top of this forum section. Here is the link:

dont buy into the naysayers of ocz.

it stems back to the vertex 3 early firmware. ocz has released more firmware updates than anyone and their vertex 3 line works flawlessly now. they stand behind their hardware.

ocz was early to the incredibly fast ssd game, and their early endevours were plagued with bluescreens. people were mad because ocz was blaming peoples hardware and not taking responsibility for the problem. they eventually did and fixed the problem. there has been no such thing since. ocz has been rock solid ever since, they got their game together.

the vertex 4 works flawlessly, always has. the vertex 3 has worked solidly for a long time.

with that said, i suggest the samsung 840 over the vertex 3. it's a toss up between the 840 and a vertex 4 though.

The 840 is a new entry and still needs to be proven for reliability. As for OCZ early on its was a problems with the Sandforce controllers. Vertex 4 is the best review SSD right now!

I agree with Neon Neophyte.

If you have the latest BIOS version on your motherboard, and the latest firmware version on the Vertex 3 then you probably won't have any problems.

That being said, I would choose the Samsung 840 Pro, which is the newer drive.

OCZ have released 2 models since the Vertex 3; the Vertex 4 and the Vector.

Now if you ask me to choose between the Vector and the Samsung 840 Pro I would say go for the Vector. :)

i really appreciate this thread re samsung 840 pro vs ocz vector.. i own both in 2 fast desktops and believe me when i say,the difference is minimal between them, i can highly recommend either ssd. Both super fast and reliable and both have had regular firmware updates. OCZ vector has been updated as recently as march 20th Samsung not since dec. These 2 drives are at the top of the heap right now and both saturate sata 3 reaching reads speeds of 550- 555 mb/s read
