Odd-ball tablet/smartphone slider question

Simple question, probably a stupid question as well; but how does the slider function on smart phones and tablets work? I understand the mechanics of a slide rail but the top half has to be electronically connected to the bottom half and i just don't understand how that works. Does a flex ribbon bend back and forth internally every time it slides? That is the only reasonable answer i can think of.
