Odd issue, DDR4 ram on my Z170 motherboard works when only 2 Slots are filled

I have a crucial ballistix sport 2400mhz (8gb) - one module , and simple crucial ram 2133 mhz (4gb) - one module.

Now the 8 GB module works only when 4 gb module is also inserted with it. So when only both of them are inserted on motherboard it works (in slot 1 and 3 respectively) and machine boots up.

If 8 GB module is installed alone it does not work. I get 5 Long Beep sounds. But if 4 GB module is installed alone than it boots perfectly. This is a odd thing, that i have not heard off. So basically 8 GB module does not work when it is the only one installed on the motherboard.

Why would this happen ? My motherboard is Gigabyte Z170 D3H, and also i am on the latest BIOS F5.

Uhh yeah, you shouldn't mix RAM modules and always use the same modules for dual channel and quad channel configurations. Different modules may have different timings, clock speeds, memory capacity and voltage requirements, mixing them will cause system issues and could even cause damage to the hardware.

What i meant is why my ballistix sport 2400 mhz (8gb) single modules does not work on motherboard, and i get 5 Beeps from it. Consider it is the only module that is installed on motherboard, that should mean this module is not bad and not working right?

But it works when i install it with one more module on the motherboard (that is 2133 MHZ module). So my simple question is why it does not work when it's the only ram module installed on the motherboard.

Actually it does work when 2133 Mhz is installed alone. Also 2400mhz does work too when i installed it in conjunction of 2133 MHZ. So when both 2133 MHZ and 2400 Mhz modules are installed together , 2400 mhz work. But if i install 2400 Mhz module as a single module it does not work.

Yes both the modules show in the BIOS. But of-course the 2400 mhz runs at 2133 mhz, as it will match the speed of slower speed ram. Windows also works fine without any glitches or problem. Also see attached screenhot from cpu-z
