Upgrading my rig with a new graphics card from Asus hd6950 to Gigabyte 970 gtx, I live in South Africa and pc components don't come cheap. I need to know if my Gigabyte Odin 720W psu will be up for the new challenge?

I currently have:
Motherboard: Asus Maximus IV Extreme
CPU: I5 2500k @ 3.3gHz
GPU: AMD Asus 6950 DirectCU II 1gb
RAM: Kingston hyper X 4GB @ 2133mHz

I am upgrading my:
GPU: GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 970(G1 Gaming Ed)
RAM: G.SKILL RipjawsX F3-2133C9D-8GXL, 8GB
HDD: Samsung 840 EVO

So, do I leave out the SSD and replace the PSU?

Solution
It means you will have problems trying to plug your PSU in so that everything works.

Yes - pcie2.0 or 3.0 is fine. Cards don't use more than pcie2.0 x 8 of bandwidth anyway.
Unless you run SLIs or having crazy overclocking ideas i dont see any issue there .
I run an i7 -4771 with 2x8GB RAM , 1 SSD + 1WD Green HDD, and a MSI GTX970 Gaming on a Corsair Bronze 650 W supply ````````````````````````````````````````

GTX970 - http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-970/specifications needs 500W with 28A on the 12V rail

Your Gigabyte - http://www.gigabyte.com.au/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5209#sp - has one 8pin (150W) and one 6 pin connector (75W).

The Odin - http://www.gigabyte.com.au/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3045#sp - has 4 rails @ 18A max.

You'd have to make sure you connected one connector from one rail each plus the mobo from another rail again. This makes it very complicated. Most good PSUs are single rail so you don't have this problem..

I will try my hand with overclocking if I need to, my current cpu(I5 2500k @3.3GHz) is running all my games fine and I don't have any bottlenecks(yet). I am looking to enjoy my games @ a smooth 60fps, or higher. If it will run Dragon Age Inquisition on max graphics then I will be a happy camper(infront of my screen).

I checked the websites you added, you posted:

"needs 500W with 28A on the 12V rail"

On the website with the psu it states:
+12V1 18A
+12V2 18A
+12V3 18A
+12V4 18A

Do all these numbers mean I will be able 2 run the 970 GTX with no problems?
Another question, will my mobo run the PCIe 3 card?

I think you'll be fine.Even when powered from one rail is that 18x12=216Watt,the standard gtx 970 doesn't use more than 150watts and then even comes 75watts through the pcie port (=via motherboard).
I can only assume that motherboard cpu and gpu are on different rails with four of them.It also seems to power that hd 6950 fine which uses about the same as the standard gtx 970,both use two pcie 6 pin cables.
