OEM hard drive factory support

Hello, I am concerned about buying a "Bare Drive" SATA Hard Drive because apparently even though the seller will warranty it for years, the manufacturer apparently "wipes their hands of it" when they sell it to the retailer. So, one cannot get firmware updates and so forth. Is this the case with all or most Hard Drive manufacturers on their OEMs sold by second party retailers?

I wouldn't go so far as to say you couldn't get firmaware updates but definitly you lose the warranty thru the manufacturer.
