So I have been seeing these Windows OS software title ending with something called OEM on website such as Newegg. Can somebody please explain me the difference between a OEM OS and a normal licensed OS, other than the fact that the OEM is cheap? Also why is it cheap? Thanks. First post on Tom's Hardware! Also I am in a process of building my own gaming PC. Can someone please direct me to a sub-forum where I can get feedback on my PC parts, and their compatibility with each other? Thanks again. Have a Merry Christmas!

OEM is cheaper, because it can be used only on 1 PC.

Retail is more expensive, because it could be installed again on another PC, if u decide to build a new one, where u will change all the major components, like...

Retail is more expensive, because it could be installed again on another PC, if u decide to build a new one, where u will change all the major components, like motherboard and CPU.

The OEM doesn't allow those changes. So if u build PC and upgrade often(every 12 mo.) than u will benefit from retail licence. And u will also get support from Microsoft.

OEM gets no support. Who cares, right : )

So get Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit ~ $99.99 @ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=32-116-986&SortField=0&SummaryType=0&Pagesize=10&PurchaseMark=&SelectedRating=1&VideoOnlyMark=False&VendorMark=&IsFeedbackTab=true&Keywords=%28keywords%29&Page=1#scrollFullInfo
