What do you all think of buying OEM CPU? I already have a heatsink and fan. What is the difference in OEM and retail. Other then the box?

Thanks a lot

The warranty. (you already mentioned HSF and other boxed goodies). IIRC the "retail" is usually 3 years while the OEM is one year.

You feel that $17 is worth it for OEM? I found retail for $17 more then the OEM. If it comes down to warranty then maybe I should shell out the extra money for 2 years warranty.

Thanks!

The OEM doesnt have the cooler and fan, which may cost more then the 17$ you save. Retail cpu are ready to install from the box. OEM, you need to buy a cooler for. And warranty is a big plus too, but I still have to see a cpu fail within 3 years...unless overclocked or badly installed.

Well, that'll have to be your decision. I'm pretty sure that technically your warranty is violated by OC'ing, and puting an aftermarket HFS on (and that includes most aftermarket thermal paste too). 'Course can be cleaned up and sent in and nobody will be the wiser. No flaming please, just pointing out the obvious here.

most oems have a 1 month warantee... your risk...although i must admit i cant remember the last time i heard of a processor failing.

If it isn't a P6 then it isn't a processor

Funny you mentioned that, I have a couple dead AMD processors here. One was blown by a faulty VRM, the other burned up when the computer fell on it's side, breaking off a heatsink tab. It has no visable burns (I don't know why), so maybe it would be exchanged if it still had a warranty.
