Office 2007/2003 compatability

why can't I open documents created in Microsoft Office word 2007 on my laptop(windows vista premium), on my PC with Microsoft Office 2003 (windows XP)?

You probably did not select the documents to save in 2003 format. Install the office compatibility pack http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3 it adds capability to office 2003 to open most Office 2007 documents.
