office 2013 activation failed

a friend's computer got "activation failed" message all of the sudden.
why does this happen, and what is the solution?
I told him to try the office "repair" tool, but it didn't help.
running on windows 10.
I think the product was activated with a MAK key, which is supposed to be permanent activation.
The computer runs for months on end with no internet connection. Is that a problem?

he tried method one, the quick repair.
when he brings his computer over to me, we will try method 2, reinstall.
problem is: will reinstalling lose the MAK key, and if so, how to find out the MAK key for Office 2013 running on Windows 10?
I don't think it is a click and run version.

You need to get the license from the same place you got it before, CD case, online code in email, etc... If you used an illegal key, we can't help you.

From where did he obtain this Office 2013?

he doesn't have the old papers or the box or the email or anything. That was a pretty long time ago.
all he has at this point is his office installation, which needs repair.

Without the license key, there isn't a whole lot you can do, aside from calling Microsoft.
