Following a Windows 10 update yesterday I am unable to open any Office 2016 program. Whenever I try to open Excel, Word, etc a window pops up saying "Updating Office, please wait a moment". After a minute an error dialog pops up for the application that I was trying to open: "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142).

I have tried uninstalling the most recent Windows updates, but when I reboot they simply get reinstalled again.

I've also tried running the Repair option for Office 2016 (from the Windows Apps and features screen), but that doesn't help either.

Any ideas for how I can fix this?

Had the issue at my workplace; doing a repair of Office 2016 did not work, I had to do a repair of (in my case) Microsoft Office 365 Apps, which is an entirely separate item in the menu from Office 365. From there I could do an online repair that resolved the issue (quick repair did not work).

Check Update History - look for any problem or failed updates.

= = =

Try running "sfc /scannow" and "dism" via the Command Prompt.

Fix Windows Update errors via DISM or System Update Readiness tool - Windows Server | Microsoft Docs

And then plan for and allow Windows more time after the next boot to do and complete any necessary updates and/or reinstalls. Especially if you live somewhere with slow or intermittent internet service.

Thanks for the replies. The update history did not show any failed or problem updates.
I did try the Online Repair option, but it actually uninstalled my Office software altogether, then warned me that it could not be reinstalled as I had a 32-bit version of the MS-Access engine installed.

In the end I had to remove the 32-bit MS-Access engine and reinstall Office 2016 from scratch.

The second link about DISM doesn't work....
