I have an HP OfficeJet 3830 and I noticed it was using a lot of ink, and sometimes I buy the "fake" ink. So this last time I bought genuine HP black ink and then I printed 62 pages of somewhat dense text and by the last page, it ran out of ink. These were printed from a PDF file from my Linux workstation.

I think that's crazy. The printer was fairly cheap so I am considering just replacing it. A more efficient one will save money by itself soon I think.

Any other ideas?

UPDATE: Obviously I also know that I can print "draft" but the question is not if "draft" exists. The question is if this is normal printer usage. I don't think so....

Solution
Most have different quality settings for printing.
See if yours is set to photo or presentation (uses lots of ink).
Draft is one term used for lower quality printing. But still good enough for printed text.
