So, what exactly happens if they don't kill enough of the enemy to keep
up their ranking- do the neat items they were able to buy due to their
previously higher rank just disappear forever out of their kit, or what?

From what I understand, is, you keep it, but you can't use it.

Hmm. So I guess the next question is, what happens when you have the item
equipped and no extra inventory space to unequip it into? Do you get a pass
until the next time you take it off, or does the game remove it and drop it
on the ground?

It moves into an overflow slot - kinda like an extra inventory slot.

Never actually tried it, but I would guess that they have added some
restriction to those slots so that they can't be abused, eg. so that
you can't pick anyting new up as long as something is in your overflow
slot.

My guess would be that the item would be treated the same as if it were
broken - equipped, but having no effect.

That would just be a guess, though, of course.

You may have noticed folks running around with "rank" titles on their
names. They have amassed honor points via the PvP system. Officers get
special treatment.
