I'm running Office 97 under Win98 and am considering upgrading to XP
so I can use .NET - will my Office 97 still work , or will I have to
upgrade this too ?

Office 97 will work with XP. Sometimes there is a problem with the
spellchecker not integrating or working with Outlook Express. If that
happens you can use this fix from Michael Stevens http://michaelstevenstech.com/spellcheck.htm
