Ultima VII, I finally got this...
Remember the alligator you find in Hook's place, the one that has a
grandfather clock inside it?
Anyone remember Peter Pan? (hits head several times)

For those who don't know, in Peter Pan there was an alligator whose name
escape me at the moment. He was important for two reasons: first, he was
the one who bit off Captain Hook's hand, and second you could always tell
when he was around because you could hear the clock inside him ticking.

*blinks* It's been such a long time since I saw it, I never made the
connection... rulg!

I knew the connection immediately, but having you remark upon it makes me
wonder if Peter Pan and the rest of the gang in hiding in Ultima 7 somewhere.

No.. but I must find it! It's about time I played U7 again.

First time (and indeed the only time) I played U7 properly, I
kind of flubbed it too. I found Hook's place by total accident
and plundered it. To this day I'm not wholly sure where it was
(and if you tell me, you die.).

When I came to the doors to the Guardian's domain, I simply
fished through the keys I had lying around in my pockets and
proudly inserted the first set that matched.

You don't know where Hook's hideout is? Uh... you do know about the cube
prism making everyone tell the truth, don't you?
That's actually the only part of the game that's completely straight-
forward.

Of course. I used it on all kinds of people, and the idea was so
cool I did something similar in my own game. (Due fairly soon.
But not as soon as I would like since I've lost my broadband
access at work due to an office move).

But you have to remember that I only got it AFTER I'd come across
Hook's personal effects. I think that Hook's place is a hut on
an island I found by accident while sailing the seven seas.
If it's the caverns in the Den, I got there by casting TK on
one of the levers to see what was there.

If you're interested in a more detailed description, you can find
my original post from 1998 on Google Groups. It's called:
"U7 - mayday.. the plot is breaking up.. abandon script.."

Not by the time I'd got there, it wasn't..

Whoa... You really had some warped priorities. You should play UO, they'd
revere you as a god. :)

I had something similar happen when I was replaying UU1 a few years ago.
UU1 is fun because the only thing that stops you from tripping a whole
bunch of triggers is the designers plan that people would explore a level
in a certain fashion. I, on the other end, kept running into all kinds of
things that I wasn't supposed to find until later (largely due to the
fact that I decided to develop the lockpicking skill, which got me
through a lot of doors that shouldn't have been opened.)
I also ended up going the back way to face Tyball, which was really
bizaree because I got to raid his vault first...
If you haven't played UU already, you should give it a shot, I think
you'd take well to it.

Hmm. What is the name of the game? (In other words, is it something I've
heard about and had little interest in, not heard about, overlooked, or
heard about and forgotten?)

It's "Reign of the Just - The False Messiah".
It's not yet ready. There is a demo from Christmas 2002, but it's
rather antiquated compared to the current version. So few NPCs,
and only about two pieces of music..

The site is: http://rotj.it-he.org

What I'm hoping to unleash when I've sorted out the remaining
issues is the game at about 66% complete. There are four
accessable worlds, in varying states of completeness.

What's holding it back from phase 2 release at the moment is:

1. A few conversation glitches

2. If you have two party members, and the hero dies, the game
doesn't stop. If you get the hero resurrected, they become
party member no.2, so when you walk around in party mode,
they follow instead of leading. Also, only the hero can talk
so you have to switch back and forth between party/solo mode.

This is an engine problem, but I believe I can fix it with
scripts. I don't want to rebuild the problem now it's
been built for all the platforms.

3. On the eastern map, the teleport rig to bypass the empty forest
causes a VM crash if you have any companions. (As you can see,
I haven't tried using party mode for the last 2 years..)

4. Problems with the farmhand's curse (it doesn't work).

5. Various stuff to be removed before release. Spoilers for the
final version.

And of course, we have the perennial problem of artwork, or rather
the lack of portraits. I have used some of my concept sketches
for now.

I'm not sure whether to put up an RC for people to test before
I do the final version. The big problem is that any changes to
the map will break existing savegames.
