Xeons work perfectly fine for gaming. They are typically more expensive than what you really need, making them not the ideal choice if you have budget concerns, but they aren't bad.

So the only reason I would even buy a xeon for gaming is if I wanted a 8 or 12 core gaming system. I run a 40 core xeon server and an i7 quad rig. The Xeon sucks for gaming. It isn't a good idea, go i3-i7.

Guys let me introduce you to the e3 series Xeons. They are based off of the mainstream i5/i7 chips and work on the LGA1155 and LGA1150 platforms. The Xeon e3-1230v3 is the one that is most recommended on here, and this is likely the one the OP was talking about. It is essentially an i7 4770 except it is slightly down clocked by 100mhz base and 200mhz turbo, and does not have integrated graphics, but it runs cooler and features a couple more instruction sets. The best part is, it's $85-90 CHEAPER than the 4770. Then there's the 1240v3 which features the same base clock speed as the 4770 and still comes in $65-70 cheaper, and the 1245v3 which even adds integrated graphics, and STILL comes in $20-25 cheaper than the 4770. They make the 4770 sound like a terrible deal to be honest. There are more powerful e3 Xeons also, but they lose their value as they approach and pass the 4770k in price.

The v3 Xeons are Haswell and the v2 Xeons are Ivy Bridge. The e3-1230v2 is about $100 cheaper than the i7 3770 making it probably the single best deal that Intel has on the market.
