Ok to plug 4pin or 6pin into video card's 8 pin?

I'm going to buy a video card - the ASUS R9280X-DC2T-3GD5 to be specific. Based on what I see on youtube, this requires a 6 pin and 8 pin power connection. I've checked the cables in my PC case and I have lots of 4 pins and some 6 pins, but no 8 pins. Can I use some sort of adapter, eg. two 4-pins + adapter = 8 pin?

I'm using a P6T case with 500W power supply.

What make and model supply?

A Radeon R9-280X needs 30 amps on the 12v rail and a 550 power supply with 1 - 6pin and 1 - 8 pin PCIE power connection.

Thanks! I just checked and although I have 6 pin connectors, I don't appear to have any 2 pin connectors (at least, not any spare ones?). Perhaps an adapter is required after all?

Your PSU specs state that you have 1 - 6 pin and 1 - 6 + 2 Pin.

You da man Blackbird! Unfortunately I have traced every wire in my computer and I still can't find a 2 pin connector. Lots of 4 pins and some 6 pins, but no 2 pins. 🙁 I guess I really will have to buy an adapter of some sort.

There should be a 6 with that little 2 hanging off of it to make it an 8.

Strange because it's suppose top be there.

strange indeed, but it's definitely not there. perhaps the computer store that put it together for me used a different wiring harness?

So if I really don't have that 2 prong adapter, can I just plug the 6 pin adapter in and it'll work?

To fully power the card both should be plugged in.

Drat. Ok so will I be okay to get (for example) a 4 to 2-pin adapter, so it'd be powered with 6pin + 6pin + 2pin? Or do I have to buy a whole new setup to get this card working?

Looks like I'm SOL. Just spoke to the 'puter store and the "new" EA500D has the 6+2 connector, but the "old" one doesn't. I have the old one. I'm hooped. 🙁
