Old 64mbs Router 20x Faster than New 300mbs Unit

For years I've used a Netgear WGR614v7 (64mb/sec) in a home network. My only real complaint was that when I transfer files between wireless computers (Win 7/ Win8), which I do a lot, the speed never exceeds 1.25 megs per sec. I was pretty sure this wasn't a router problem, but when I saw that I could pick up a $20 router with 4,000 4 star reviews - a TPLINK WR 841 N, 300mbs, I thought what the heck, for that price I'll take a chance.

Shortly after installing it, I noticed that my internet access had slowed and ran some speed tests using several sites, ready to call Time Warner and complain. What I discovered was that when I surf the web WHILE I am transferring files between computers, my normal 10mbs drops down to 600kbs to 1mbs.

Got out the old router, which broadcasts in g and b mode, by the way, and ran the same tests. With a transfer in progress, I got 5mbs from one site, and 10mbs from another! The old one is 20x faster while a transfer is in progress.

So file transfers had virtually no affect on internet speeds with my small, one antenna unit, but they devastated bandwidth when I used the new unit. I'm ready to send the new unit back, but thought I'd check with some experts about what was going on.

While I have your attention, any chance of upping that 1mbs file transfer speed without spending any money? Thanks for the help.

Solution
I'm sure that your original Netgear router is much better than that 20 dollar TP link one. Can the TPLINK give out 5ghz signal? If so, this will boost speeds SUBSTANTIALLY, but the only thing that will be able to connect to it are things that can connect to a 5ghz network (mobile phones won't work, some wireless adapters won't work.)

The speed never goes up because that's simply what you're paying for. What internet are you paying for?

That's a simple solution and is probably right. The Netgear is simply a better router. Not too surprising. So I will send this TPLink back. Nothing in its specs about 5ghz, so that's not gonna happen.

Re my internet speed.

Interesting thing about my Time Warner account. A year ago, I got a new plan, not a bad deal, about $120 for phone (free LD and VM) cable TV and broadband. For years I'd been getting 10 to 15 mbs, but with the latest my speed was dropped to about 1.5 mbs. I called TW and they said - that was correct, so I went down to the local office and told them I was going to cut back services if they didn't get me back to 10mbs. The local girl went online, changed something and everything returned to normal.

Two weeks ago MY TW modem crashed. They gave me a new one (it was a different unit completely, they said that the old one was outdated) and when I got home, I'm back to 1.5 megs per sec. So I went back to the local office. This time she looked into my account, appeared confused but then said she could get me something called 5-50 for $6 a month more. Thinking this might get me to at least 25mbs, I said okay. UNFORTUNATELY, all this did was get me back to 10 mbs. Plan to go back in and bitch next week, but if anyone has any suggestions...

Thanks for the answer.
