Hi there, I apologize if this question has been asked, I looked around a bit and couldn't find much regarding my hardware, at least not the answers I had hoped.
I recently built a new gaming PC: AMD Ryzen 1.5 3.2GHz (Socket AM4), ASUS ROG B-350F Gaming MoBo, 16GB G.Skill DDR4 RAM, 500GB Samsung SSD, and using my "old" GeForce 960 GTX and OLD 650Watt Antec EarthWatt PSU. I needed a new system to keep up with the new games coming out, and the switch over went perfect.
I had HOPED to just buy a cheap 500-600Watt PSU.. I got a 500Watt for like $20 online. As well as a cheap PCI-E Graphics Card GeForce 9700 for $10. I hooked everything up into a cheap mid-ATX tower... unfortunately the old AMD Phenom 9850 CPU and ASUS M3A32-MVP Deluxe Motherboard are not giving me anything but a blank screen. I'm guessing I may have damaged something during the transfer to the new case?
I tried the "old/new" GeForce 9700 on my NEW system (AMD Ryzen 1.5 CPU, ASUS ROG B-350F Gaming MoBo) and it worked perfectly fine. So I knew I didn't get a bum Video Card as it was cheap off an auction site and was worth the price whether kept as a backup or not.
I figured, maybe it's this 500W PSU which should be plenty considering it's pretty bare-bone (no CD-ROM, small GPU, no extra gadgets/fans, etc), so I tried hooking my old system back up via my 650 Watt Antec PSU, still the same thing.. no beep, no picture. So I've narrowed down the problem to either the CPU or Motherboard.... because I know that with bad RAM the system would at least beep, post, show me something... but nothing, just a blank screen as I hear the CPU fan spin and watch the green light on the motherboard stay lit.
The Motherboard lights up on BOTH PSU's, the CPU fan spins (Zalman Heatsink) as well as any fans connected to the motherboard. There is nothing else I can think of besides that the CPU died out (perfect timing!), or something on the Motherboard is busted.
The old system was playing some of the newest games wonderfully, despite the old CPU and 8GB DDR2 RAM it was literally playing Destiny 2 the day before I built my new PC. I wanted more power, and considering the motherboard/cpu are 10+ years old I guess I am lucky it lasted this long to begin with... I was just hoping to keep it and give it to a family member who has a piece of garbage laptop that complains all the time.
Old System Specs:
AMD Phenom 9850
ASUS M3A32-MVP Deluxe
8GB G.Skill DDR2 RAM
GeForce 9700 GTS (also tried my 960 GTX... same problem)
500 Watt PSU
I'd be more upset if my new PC didn't work lol, but it's a shame this old system went dead on me.. I feel like it got mad at me? Maybe the 500Watt PSU shorted something? But as I said, the MoBo lights up (so it's ON correct?). But the CPU, which I did not mess with, nor the heatsink... I have no idea... I guess I can search online for a cheap older AMD Phenom... Socket AM2 I believe.
Maybe I just answered my own question. I apologize for the lengthy post, just wondering if anyone had any ideas... I will keep trying, I think I will at least try buying a cheap AM2 CPU that should fit this board fine... if that doesn't work, I guess it only narrows it down to the motherboard, which I can probably find cheap somewhere as both these pieces of hardware are literally 10+ years old... thanks and I will certainly document my progress, or lack of!
