Hey guys.
So I am wanting to do an extreme budget-lan build thingy with kind of old school parts for fun. I have literally everything i need to build this except a gpu and cpu. I was thinking a q6600 and a gtx580 or 480, whichever will work better with eachother. I know the 580 handily beats the 480 in everything but i was looking around some old threads and found that there was some bottlenecking going on with the q6600 and these gpus? I want to know if it's worth it to spend another 10 dollars (lol) on the 580 if it's pretty much gonna be pointless. Also, would a different lga775 cpu work better than a q6600? From what i've read there isn't a huge difference in cpu performance when it came to the c2q or maybe i am mistaken. I will also be trying my hand at overclocking these chips, so maybe that can make a difference too.
Sorry for the long read, any advice on some oldschool hardware is appreciated!

If your board supports C2Q 9 series, get Q9550 or Q9650, they are worth it over Q6600. They overclock pretty good as well.

I would advise against using GTX580 (and especially GTX480), you will be able to get the same level of performance from Radeon RX460 which is much newer and better suitable for gaming. Not to mention much lower power consumption and heating... If you prefer NVidia, 1050Ti would be even better.

Right! Im using an Intel board, I just took a look at it and I don't see a product/serial number so I'll have to take a look again. Only reason I am considering an older card like that is because they go for about 35-55 dollars on ebay used and I kind of want to see what i can do for really cheap. Also the q9650 is about 55 dollars more than i would pay for a q6600 but a q9550 is only about 30.. ill have to look into that. Thanks for your input!

Intels spec verification was actually a lot harder for me to do than just googling all the serial number. It doesn't say it supports c2qs but I was under the impression that most 775 chips were interchangeable. Here are 2 product/serial numbers that were on the mobo: intel p35-pb7-rfz9, d945gclg1, e210882. For some reason im just having trouble grasping whats compatible with this mobo and whats not. Lol
