I built my current computer in mid-2015 and figure I'm due for an upgrade as I'm starting to stutter on newer games even on the lowest settings. Here is my current build:

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: AMD A10-7870K 3.9 GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Thermaltake CLP0587 106.2 CFM CPU Cooler
Motherboard: Asus CROSSBLADE RANGER ATX FM2+ Motherboard
Memory: G.Skill Trident X 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR3-2133 Memory
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 970 4 GB Video Card
Power Supply: Silverstone Strider Essential 700 W 80+ Certified ATX Power Supply

I have been going between two different ideas:

1.
PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 2700X 3.7 GHz 8-Core Processor
Motherboard: Asus ROG Crosshair VII Hero ATX AM4 Motherboard
Memory: G.Skill Trident Z 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory
Storage: Samsung 970 Evo 500 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 1660 Ti 6 GB GAMING X Video Card
Case: Corsair Carbide Series 678C ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: SeaSonic FOCUS Plus Platinum 850 W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

2.
PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 3.6 GHz 8-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15 CHROMAX.BLACK 82.52 CFM CPU Cooler
Motherboard: Asus ROG Crosshair VIII Hero ATX AM4 Motherboard
Memory: G.Skill Trident Z 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-4000 Memory
Storage: Corsair MP600 Force Series Gen4 500 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 3 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon RX 5700 XT 8 GB NITRO+ Video Card
Case: Corsair Carbide Series 678C ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: SeaSonic FOCUS Plus Platinum 850 W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

Now I know #1 is not using current gen parts but I was going to tinker with liquid cooling if I went with that build while still being able to get decent frame rates on newer games. #2 is obviously a better build and takes into account the price discrepancy that liquid cooling would cost. My question is which do you think I should go with? Thanks for any help in advance.

Solution
Even with a monster liquid cooling system. You're only going to get minor clock improvements over good air cooling. You definitely aren't going to close the gap between those two.

That RAM is absurdly expensive. Get DDR4 3600. There isn't a huge difference in performance. The money saved could get you a 1TB Gen4 SSD and Ryzen 9 3900x.

I like 2 better but I wouldn't bother with the platinum PSU just go gold and the Gigabyte OC rx5700 xt is way better value for money than Nitro and just as good. Ryzen 7 3700x is a very good processor and has quite a low TDP 65 watts I think.

Thank you for the input. It was my gut feeling to go with that build, I also appreciate the input on an updated list. Would definitely be better with the 3900x and dropping the ram slightly.
