My wife is using a computer that is 8-10 years old, from Intel's Sandy Bridge generation. The built-in graphics has VGA and DisplayPort (DP) outputs. We were using a DP to a DVI converter to go into the monitor's DVI port.

I was thinking that it didn't look as good as it should - maybe the DVI output is no better than the VGA? I put in a Geforce GT 520 graphics card and went DVI -> DVI.

I think it looks better but she doesn't see the difference.

Should it look better, or am I just imagining it?

Depends on DVI type, DVI-D is digital signal and DVI-I is analog same as VGA.
