There are a whole bunch of FAQs. There is a FAQ periodically posted to the
group, full of basic questions. There are prerelease FAQs for each prerelease
since Nemesis ... hmmm, no, actually checking, they go back to Exodus.

_All_ Magic cards are interoperable; the Oracle
(http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dci/oracle) shows you what the wordings
of older cards are currently considered to be.
In a Constructed tournament, generally various sets are specified as legal.
The kicker here is that any older (or newer) version of a card that's in
one of those sets is -also- legal to play in that tournament. Your Unlimited
Mountains are still playable today, for example.

Well, since 9th Edition isn't due out until NEXT YEAR, I'd say they're at least
a little off. Many (though not all) tournaments are what's called Type II,
in which, at present, seven sets are legal: 8E, ON, LG, SC, MD, DS, 5D. But,
as noted above, cards from any earlier set that are reprinted in one of those
sets? Are also quite legal in Constructed Type II tournaments.
[The exception is Alpha, which had different _corners_ from any other Magic
set at all; Alpha cards are only legal in sleeves AND only if you can't
tell at all through the sleeves that they're Alpha, which in practice means
re-sleeving every couple of matches.]
Cards from an earlier set that were NOT reprinted in one of the sets legal
for a given tournament aren't legal to use in that tournament. In addition,
Collector's Edition cards, Unglued cards other than the basic lands, and
Portal/Starter cards that have never been reprinted in any actual Magic set
are not DCI-legal (and never have been [yes, regardless of whether they're
in sleeves or not]).
