What is the big, grey, bulky cable called that was used to connect CD-ROM to the MOBO? And is there any way i can plug in a SATA DATA cable in one of these CD-ROMs?

EDIT: Okay, this cable is called IDE, found that out. Is there any way i can plug in a SATA cable in one of these without buying a IDE to SATA converter?

Solution

When you install it, it will ask for the license key. The install media and whatever drive you need is irrelevant.

I literally only need the drive to install Windows. Once. If i have a Windows 7 disc, can i get a .iso out of it, so i can make a bootable USB?

If all you have is the physical DVD, then you will need a drive of some sort.
If you have a valid Retail license key, you can download the ISO file direct from Microsoft. Here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-recovery

I am running Windows XP on this rig (i need the Windows 7 thing for my new rig), and i have a disc with Windows 7, that is the dreamspark edition.

OK...if you go to that above link, click on Windows 7....what happens?

Well, i don't have the product key, since it's an old disc. I guess the only option is asking someone to lend me their SATA CD-ROM, or buying one. Well thanks for the help!
