Old CrossFire setup is interacting with new Mobo.

So over Christmas I got a good deal on a CPU/Mobo Combo.

An ASUS M5A97 and an AMD FX-8350. I got both of them for I think $175 so it seemed like something I couldn't pass up.

Now here's where the weirdness comes in. Before I had a pair of AMD 5850s that I got a few years ago along with my old FX Quard core CPU and an ASUS M4* series mobo. I figured I could just swap the mobo and cpu and use all my old stuff until I can replace it. Which I did and it worked, sort of. When I put the mobos in just as they were in the old set up(One has a different color fan than the other so i knew which is which) the comp worked just fine except that the 2nd GPU wasn't being detected. Before this both GPUs worked fine and ran in Xfire just fine in the old set up.

So naturally I started troubleshooting. I took out the extra GPU and it booted fine. I took out the Red GPU and put in the Black(the other colored one that was not showing up in xfire) and it detected it just fine and booted like usual. So neither GPU is faulty.

Now this is where it gets weird. When I take the Black GPU that was in the lower slot, and put it in the top slot while the Red GPU is now in the bottom slow.... it doesn't boot. I get this endless loud BEEEEP that sounds like a bios beep code for posting but its just one solid continious beep.

I'm stuck at what could be the problem as I've looked everywhere and have yet to find someone with my problem. I'm really not looking to buy a new GPU for at least until the 3xx series are out. And even then I'd still like to get some use of these GPUs as they still work perfectly fine by themselves.

Any ideas?

Are you sure the continuous beep isn't followed by some short beeps? (followed by three beeps would mean that no VGA is detected). Did you actually try to reinstall the drivers for the GPUs?

You may also want to consider updating the BIOS to the latest version if it isn't already.

I would think it's just a driver/BIOS conflict that has occured because you changed the motherboard. In theory you should be able to just change the motherboard without doing any reinstallation if it's the same model/manufacture but I wouldn't be surprised if the system can't handle the old crossfire setup with the new BIOS.

Some motherboards may have a system BIOS option to switch between single ordual PCIe slot support. The default setting may be single slot support

What was your old motherboard?

Nopes literally one solid conitious beep that never stops until I turn of the system. I have updated the new mobo to the latest Bios available from the ASUS website.

My original MOBO was a ASUS M4A79T Deluxe.
