I had a PC custom built in November. While I am not very technically knowledgeable, I did quite a bit of research and sought help from people who know more than I do. (In fact. I did a lock of poking around here on tom's to figure out some of the components.) I got the best I could afford and lucked out in obtaining an RTX 3080. I am happy...no...ecstatic with my PC. I'm able to play games like AC Valhalla, Witcher 3, and Death Stranding for hours on end without problems. Well, except for bugs in Valhalla.

But I'm stumped by an old match 3 game called Sky Bubbles Deluxe that was released in 2006. It's something I like to play when I need something easy and mindless. The game starts out fine but as I play, it starts to stutter and lag. After about 20 minutes, it's so bad that it's unplayable. The only thing that fixes it is restarting my PC.

Here are my system specs:

Operating System: Windows 10 Home (64 bit)
Processor: AMD Ryzen 9 3950X Processor (16x 3.5GHZ/64MB L3 Cache)
Motherboard: ASUS ROG X570 CROSSHAIR VIII FORMULA - WiFi 6, ARGB Header (2), USB 3.2 Ports (1 Type-C, 11 Type-A), M.2 Slot (2)
Memory: 32 GB [16 GB x2] DDR4-3200 Memory Module - G.SKILL Trident Z (RGB LED)
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 - 10GB GDDR6X - MSI Gaming X Trio (VR-Ready)
Power Supply: 850 Watt - CORSAIR RM850X Black - 80 PLUS Gold, Fully Modular
Processor Cooling: NZXT Kraken X63 280mm ARGB Liquid Cooling System
Primary Hard Drive: 2 TB Samsung 860 EVO SSD -- Read: 550MB/s, Write: 520MB/s - Single Drive
Secondary Hard Drive: 500 GB Samsung 860 EVO SSD -- Read: 540MB/s, Write: 520MB/s - Single Drive
BIOS Version/Date: American Megatrends Inc. 2103, 6/19/2020
SMBIOS Version: 3.2

I know it's silly but I'd like to be able to play this game. Am I out of luck because it's so old it's incompatible with my system?

Solution
In windows, you can change compatibility settings for a game .
Right click on the exe file and select properties.
On the compatibility tab, you can select compatibility mode as far back as windows 95.
It's almost a guaranteed problem with the game. If your absolute beast of a machine can handle Death Stranding and Assassins Creed Valhalla, it'll have no problem running a simple matching game. Side note: check if your BIOS is in need of an update. This is unlikely to solve your game issue, but it may solve other potential issues.
