Hello,
I'm not really all too knowledgeable about computers, so I was hoping that someone here could maybe help me.
So a couple of weeks ago my brother bought a new computer without a GPU. And because I wanted to play Total war: Warhammer with him I decided to gift him my old GTX 760. I knew this GPU worked and was able to run the game well enough because I had done so previously that card in my pc.
My brother's specs are:
Palit GeForce GTX 760 Jetstream
Crucial MX500 500GB SSD
Intel core i3-8100
AsRock H310M-HDV/M.2
1x 8GB RAM
Windows 10
But whenever he starts a new campaign he gets a black screen withing 5 minutes of playing even though the game itself keeps running like normal. We know that the game keeps working even during the black screen because we can hear the sounds of the battles happening.
When I put the GTX 760 back into my pc it works perfectly fine and I do not experience any black screens. When I put my new GPU, a GTX 1050 TI, in my brothers computer it also works fine and he doesn't experience any black screens. Based on this I assumed that it was a driver problem, but I didn't really know what to do about it.
My specs are:
MSI GeForce GTX 1050 TI
Crucial MX500 500GB SSD
Intel core i5-4430
Asrock B85M-HDS
2x 8GB RAM
Windows 7
We both have been looking for a solution for this problem for the past couple of weeks, and I was wondering whether someone here maybe knew what causes this and/or how to fix it.
What we have tried so far (not necessarily in this order):
- Updating the drivers
- Downgrading the drivers (this allowed the game to run for about 60 minutes before the black screen the first time the game was launched. After the first time it was 5 minutes again)
- Reinstalling windows and updating the drivers
- Removing the Nvidea drivers completely and running windows updates (this allowed the game to run for about 60 minutes before the black screen the first time the game was launched. After the first time it was 5 minutes again)
- Physically cleaning the the GPU and replacing the thermal paste.
- Updating the motherboard BIOS
- Checking the RAM for errors with MemTest86 (No errors were found)
- sfc/scannow in cm
- DISM/ Online / Cleanup-image
- Reinstalling the game
- Verified game cache in steam.
- Running the game as administrator
One other possible problem we found is that the game automatically launches with DirectX 11 but in dxdiag it says that my brothers pc has Directx 12.
