After much thought I've decided to upgrade my current pc (which is pretty out dated). Im trying to spend as little as possible and buy just one or two things at a time for right now. I"m going with the athlon 860k and asus A88XM-A motherboard. I have a old geforce 9500gt that I want to use intil I get another gpu sometime next month. I know the card will fit on the board I just didnt know if there would be any compatibility issues. The specs on the board are pcie 3.0 and 2.0. I dont even know what version my gpu is, I'm sure its a 1.0. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Yup should work fine. Just make sure you have a decent PSU to power everything. You can get the CPU and board while using that 9500GT, and then upgrade the GPU next month. My next upgrades would be an SSD and tower cooler to overclock that CPU and get a bit more performance out of it.

I would like to run most current games but I know that I need a new gpu first. Im not really sure how well the 860k will run most games even with an updated gpu. To be honest I've been back and fourth between amd and intel for awhile. Seems like I'm always telling myself for just a few more dollars I can get this. And then I'm looking at a i7 and fully decked out motherboard. I really need to spend about 200 on a cpu, motherboard and ram. Frys has the 860k for 59 dollars. I don't think that motherboard I mentioned does overclocking. Frys has the MSI A88X-G45 Gaming motherboard for 120 dollars but that kind goes over my budget. Does the 860k really need to be overclocked?

A 860k is enough for most games but overclocking would really stretch it's usefulness. That board does support CPU overclocking. It's unlikely to be the bottleneck unless you get something faster than a Radeon 280 or GeForce 960 though. My GFs PC is an AMD 7300 with a Radeon 6850 and it's fine for most games at medium or lower settings. Plays Rocket League just fine ^_^
