Old hard drive in new PC question

I took my old drive (WD 640GB SATA) out of my old rig and put it in my newer rig. I got windows to recognize it by assigning it a drive letter and rebooting. When I try to view the contents of the drive it tells me I must format the disk before I can use it. It then tells me the drive is not accessible, it does not contain a recognized file system. I don't want to format it, I want to transfer the files off of it. Any help would be much appreciated.

I7-920 stock-no OC, 6GB Kingston DDR-3, Asus P6T Deluxe, WD 300GB Raptor-boot drive, WD 640GB Data drive, Antec 1200 case, Win 7 Pro

if it tell you to format then format it there is no way to use it.

but after format use data recovery software might be it help you.
