Hey all,

So recently my PC went kaput, hard drive decided not to load windows one day (it was getting a little louder than usual so I knew it was on it's way out) It finally went so I knew it was time for a new one and fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.
Fresh install is perfect, however trying to remove my old data and files which are somewhat extremely important to me I cannot do so, the hard drive appears in My Computer with the new Caddy Casing I got for it to enable me to access it. I can't access 'User' but I can access everything else, obviously user is the one with all my data in it.

It says access denied, I have tried resetting the security, adding my new computer administrator and that also tells me access denied.

I haven't encrypted the computer's old (original) hard drive or added security since I bought the computer brand new a couple of years ago.

Is there a program that I can download to allow me full access to the hard drive?

Thanks guys,
Freddie

download a program called take ownership, its actually just a script. Install it and then right click on the folder and select 'take ownership'. It may take a while depending on how many files you have in there but once its done you should now be able to access files

Try this trick.

- Open task manager
- Go to the processes tab and click Show processes from all users
- Find Explorer and end task. Your taskbar etc will disappear, don't worry it's meant to.
- Go to File > New Task
- Type explorer and make sure to tick the box for Run task as administrator then click OK

Now try accessing the Users folder and it should let you in.

Unfortunately my drive doesn't stay connected to the PC for that long, I have to keep resetting it. It's really dying.

Is there another quicker program or another method of recovery?

Cheers guys,
Freddie
