I have an ASRock Z77 Extrem4 motherboard that I built years ago and have been running a GeForce GTX 1080ftw for the past several years. I need to replace the GPU and was wondering if any of the new video cards (nvidia) are compatible? I know I should upgrade the mb&cpu but funds are the issue. Any ideas or just go with an older card?

What are ALL the other parts in this system?
Especially the PSU.

I was hoping you wouldn't ask that question but I finally found the manual. Rosewill Extreme 80 Plus? Does that sound right? Not sure the age but several years.

Does this look like your power supply?

This wasn't one of their better ones, so if it's as old as the 1080 Ti, it's really time to upgrade it if the GPU is being upgraded. Back then, they had a few Gold-rated and better ones that were really quite excellent, mostly made by Super Flower (the Capstones were basically just the predecessors to the EVGA G2 and G3 that Super Flower made for them). But their Bronze-rated ones tended to be much cheaper quality.

That is the one. Originally I upgraded to this unit because I was having reboot issues but it turned out the 1080 had a manufacturing defect which was causing overheating. They sent me a heat sink to install along with some rubber padding which it appears to have "leaked" some sort of sticky substance over time. Just a guess. But it did fix the problem.

I will get a PS next if this one can't run a newer card, I'm just not sure if the MB is compatible anymore with new gen GPUs. I will concede that I do need a major overall upgrade, its just that everything still works fine for what I do except this 660 ti isn't cutting it. Also, being on a fixed income, I'll have to piece together a new computer over time.

Your motherboard should be perfectly compatible with modern GPUs but the old CPU will hold back their performance to not any better than your old 1080 if you select nVidia. That's still way better than a 660Ti and OK for temporary use while you piece together the new system (preferably starting with the PSU), but AMD would perform better for you right now.
Thank you! I will take your advice and begin with the PS. I've never been good with numbers and AMD nomenclature never made sense to me so I went with nVidia. I might look into AMD as well. Cheers!
