Cannon has told me they no longer support this printer on Windows 8. However, then I connect the printer through the USB, it can print. All I really need is to get the scanner to work and I'll be happy. But without valid drivers, I'm not sure how this will be accomplished.

How do I get the scanner to work on Windows 8?

Current Status on Windows 8:
Printing: Works
toolbox from XP installation CD: not working
drivers are not showing as installed

Please provide previous troubleshooting steps, or information that can help Canon assist you:
Toolbox software: installs but says "A supported Scanner is not installed. Please install a supported scanner, and then restart Toolbox." when selecting the settings button

Old Drivers: Installer did not error. these worked on XP just fine

WIA Windows Image Acquisition: installed and enabled

Devices and Printers: Troubleshooting MP730 says "the driver for mp730 is not installed. install the latest driver for the device. However, apply this fix, does not find the drivers for the mp730.

Has anything changed since the unit funtioned properly?
(Installation of software, setting, cabling etc.):

Switched from XP to Windows 8. Works fine with XP but having problems getting the toolbox and drivers to install / work correctly in the new Windows 8 PC.

Thanks for any help,
Dan

Hi, I tried both approaches. They both lead back to the same issue.

http://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/canon_mp730.html - Requires a scanner driver for the MP730 and points the customer to www.cannon.com where I already know there isn't a Windows 8 version of the MP730 drivers.

http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/printers... - I downloaded the file and execute it. It said Drivers installed successfully. But when I look at the device manager for MP730, there isn't any driver associated with device. I tried associating the MP730 device with the new drivers by searching the C:\ and all sub directories for these new driver files I just installed. But it can't find them.

So I'm back to square one. I need a driver for the MP730 that will work on the Win8 64 platform. Once I have that then I can use Vuescan or another product that scans.

BTW - I can still print on the MP730. Luckily nothing has changed that functionality.

Thanks for all your help,
Dan

I asked my son Steven who runs computer Doctor of Clovis ( http://www.computerdr.org/ ) to assist me with this problem since I have 4 MP730 printers.

He made something called a Virtual XP on the desktop of my Windows 8.1 computer, and I am now using this to operate my MP730 scanner on my Windows 8.1 computer.

I use Adobe Acrobat to scan my documents (the Foxit PDF Maker he first tried was far too slow), and then I save the scan to a transfer file that moves the file from the Virtual XP to my Windows 8 desktop where I can then manipulate the file, attach it to e-mails, and send.

This was a little bit complicated to set up, but it is not complicated to use. Steven, or any other really good computer guy should be able to do this for you. Steven is in New Mexico, but he used a special program to tap directly into my desktop in California, and he fixed this right up. He is also going to put this on a portable hard drive so that I can use the same thing with my other 3 MP730's.

So........... take that Canon! I can still use my multifunction machine as intended, and continue to use my really cheap generic ink in my continuous inking adapted MP730. I feel so smug :)
